PLPA correspondent, Kevin M. Neibauer recently caught up with hometown boy, Jeff Spano. Spano, born and raised in Philadelphia, chats candidly about the Wings, the game in general and a new business venture that he has started. | |
I understand that you recently opened a new business? |
A bar- restaurant in the Villanova area, it's actually Garrett Hill. It is located at the intersection of Conestoga Road and Garrett Road. It's called Brothers. It's already becoming kind of a lacrosse hang-out. We just opened it up on St. Patrick's Day. We have Bistro type food. Really, really nice bar food. We have a large selection of beers on tap. Great food and a great vibe to the place. Very cool spot. (NOTE- Wings equipment manager, Mike Fox is one of the bartenders) |

You were born and raised in the Philadelphia area, is it a big thrill to play for the Wings? |
It couldn't be better. I wouldn't play anywhere else. The fans here are the best in the league, by far. I think they are the best fans in Philadelphia as well. Flyers games, Sixers games, nobody beats the Wings crowd. I grew up watching the Wings, dreaming about playing for the Wings. I didn't know if I ever would get here, but, here I am, am I loving every minute of it.

You mentioned watching the Wings when you were growing up, who were some of your favorites? |
Billy Miller...I loved Juice, Chris Flynn, of course, Tom Marechek. Chris Bates, who was my coach in college...great guy. Paul Deniken is a great friend of mine. It's kind of a fraternity. Guys you get to know, it's really great. It's great to keep in contact.

Switching gears. Toronto lost tonight.... |
I just heard that. It's amazing how much parity there is in the league. It makes for some really, really exciting games. It seems like every game played in our division is a one goal game. Every game means the world, so, it's playoff time now. |
Did the Wings do anything different defensively tonight? |
We concentrated on challenging every loose ball. Not giving up anything around the boards. Of course, we had to watch (John) Grant and (Shawn)Williams. They do a great job on the left side. But, Rochester also does a great job on the right side as well. They can score six goals on the left and six from the right side as well. You have to key on Grant and Williams, but, if you key too much, they have guys like Mike Accursi and Evans. You definitely always have to give a second look to Grant and Williams. But, you also have to play a little bit conservative as well.

Recently, the team added some new faces, Brad Self and Mike Regan, how are they working out? |
I think they are doing a great job, Selfer is real solid, he adds a good element to our transition, that's a real big part of our game. We have a lot of speed out there with Selfer, Kyle Sweeney, Dan Finck and myself. Mike Regan gave us a big boost last week. Mike has experience and skills that will definitely help us out down the stretch. |
