Wing Select Forward Dan Dawson With First Pick in Boston Blazers Dispersal Draft

The Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) selected forward Dan Dawson as the first overall pick in today’s dispersal draft of Boston Blazers players. The Wings also selected Nick Cotter (19), transition player Brett Queener (25) and traded second round pick John Orsen to the Colorado Mammoth for forward Ned Crotty.

Widely regarded as one of the best box lacrosse players in the world and the 2010 NLL MVP, Dawson will join the Wings and be re-united with his younger brother Paul Dawson who is a defenseman for the team. Dawson has tallied 321 goals and 447 assists in his 10-year NLL career.

“I’m extremely excited to be part of the Philadelphia Wings organization. There’s a tremendous amount of pride and tradition surrounding the team and I’m thrilled about being a part of that,” said Dawson. “When I’m done playing lacrosse one of my proudest memories is going to be playing with my brother Paul. I’m going to cherish that forever.”

“Dan is a special person both on and off the floor, a true professional at all levels,” said Head Coach and General Manager Johnny Mouradian. “Everyone appreciates what Dan does for the game of lacrosse and his accomplishments to succeed at the highest level. At the same time he make players around him better. We welcome him with open arms.”

In the second round of the dispersal draft the Wings selected defenseman John Orsen but then traded him to the Colorado Mammoth in exchange for forward Ned Crotty. Prior to playing for the Colorado Mammoth last season, Crotty won the NCAA Division I National Championship at Duke University, the FIL World Championship (with Team USA), and the Tewaaraton Trophy, presented annually to the nation’s best men’s lacrosse player. He also played for Major League Lacrosse’s Chicago Machine after being chosen first overall in the 2010 MLL Draft.

The Wings also added forward Nick Cotter and transition player Brett Queener in subsequent rounds. Cotter tallied 15 goals and 15 assists for the Blazers last year while Queener recovered 44 loose balls in 2010.

NLL & PLPA Partner on Right To Play Initiative

League and Players' Association team up to assist in supporting sport and play programs for children in need

New York (February 15, 2010) - The National Lacrosse League (NLL) and the Professional Lacrosse Players Association (PLPA) are pleased to announce a partnership to promote Right To Play events at selected NLL venues this season.

"We are pleased to be partnering with the PLPA on this very worthwhile initiative," said NLL Commissioner George Daniel. "We look forward to help raise the awareness about Right To Play throughout the remainder of the 2010 NLL season."

Right To Play is an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in the most disadvantaged areas of the world. Right To Play is supported by an international team of top athletes from more than 40 countries, including the players of the National Lacrosse League.

"Sport and play can bring so many positive qualities to one's life and plays a key role in the development of a child", said Chris McElroy, team captain of the Edmonton Rush and one of the NLL players leading in the Right To Play efforts. "We, as athletes, can really relate to the power of sport and play growing up. The PLPA is excited about this partnership, as Right To Play is an incredible organization and we couldn't think of a better way to do our part in improving the lives of children in some of the most disadvantaged places of the world."

As role models, these athletes inspire children, raise awareness and promote opportunities for funding for Right To Play projects. Led by four-time Olympic gold medalist and Right To Play President and CEO Johann Olav Koss, the program's Athlete Ambassadors include Wayne Gretzky, Alexander Ovechkin from the NHL and the NBA's Jose Calderon. Current NLL players Mike Accursi, Ryan Cousins, Dan Dawson, Tracey Kelusky and Chris McElroy serve as Athlete Ambassadors to the program.

Upcoming 'Right To Play' Nights to be hosted by NLL clubs include March 13th (Boston Blazers at TD Garden), April 10th (Buffalo Bandits at HSBC Arena), April 16th (Edmonton Rush at Rexall Place) and April 24th (Minnesota Swarm at Xcel Energy Center). Additional dates and venues will be announced shortly.

For more information on Right To Play, visit the program's website at www.righttoplay.com
